Cartoon 708: Guns and more guns What has prompted the rush to purchase fire arms? In the 1960s there was the Civil Rights movement and Affirmative Action. It ushered Afro Americans into heretofore positions reserved for Whites. In the 1980s the Reagan Administration admitted America was not turning out the numbers of scientist and engineers required by government and business. They embraced foreign non-“Whites” with these degrees primarily from Asia. They carefully crafted a “glass ceiling”. Look around today in government and business and you see the glass ceiling fails. Minorities hold high positions across the board in government, science and technology. Most often they are Asian. The White majority is seeing themselves increasingly marginalized in the competition to succeed by the unfair competitors. The foreigners are often the best and brightest their society has to offer. Just being “White” is increasingly difficult to trump mediocrity. The “White” prerogative in American society is being squeezed. Add to the demographic mix the influx of Spanish, Caribbean and African immigrants and their higher birthrate. From a traditional “White” perspective, they are losing “their’ nation. It is being taken over by people who did not come over on the Mayflower, who did not fight in the War for Independence, and who did not invent and build this great nation [I am certain the “Conservatives” among the native Americans made similar arguments about the influx of European pilgrims]. They fear these people getting control of things and changing the nation. They are preparing for that day by demonstrating they are willing to fight through the display and purchasing of weapons. They envision another “civil war”. Even more alarming they see external forces at work that is changing the balance of world power. As little as a few years ago they thought America was invincible. It ruled the world with its military, financial and political might. They now watch daily on the news what China and the EU are doing that will force change here. They wonder how can this be? How can the world make demands on us? They see how we have to negotiate with others in order to execute our desires. In the case of China, it is very disgraceful that we have to bow to the wishes of these “yellow” people. The “White” supremacy movement in America has grown. They are not just a fringe. The financial crisis is further filling ranks because of the competition for jobs. The ranks include the very well educated and wealthy too. They are buying guns along with everyone else. No one is giving up their birthright “prerogative”. |
