Cartoon 714: Save thy Self The Mexican 2006 presidential election “won” by Felipe de Jesús Calderón Hinojosa is still being contested. He has emboiled Mexico in a direct confrontation with the drug cartels at the bequest of America. Each escaltion on his part has resulted in defeat. The whole nation is now reeling from the violence and social disruption. The nation is augurably at the point of govermental collaspe. Mexico is being forced to try to solve what is an American problem of “supply” and “demand”. American money fuels the drug trade. America has done little to really curtail drugs in its nation. No one is willing to guest how much of the profits on American bank balance sheets and money fueling hedge funds are from the drug trade. It is not in America’s economic interest to stop the drug trade. There is also all the collateral benfits. Law enforcement organizations get higher budgets, certain government agencies can acquire funds out of sight for their operations, prisons are profitable big businesses and politicans can pound their chests. The answer for Mexico is really simple. But do they have the political will to standup to America? State to the world that America has failed to take a commensurate level of action in its borders to eliminate drugs from the “demand” side and we can no longer bear the weight of America’s failings. The answer is for Mexico to come to a legal accommodation with the drug cartels. Charge them a tax for the legality and go after those that refuse. |
