Cartoon 818: Power Plays
The goal in political power is to gather a strong fervent constituency that will give carte blanche to act on what they believe is their behalf. To achieve this you need a rallying cry. The constituency does not have to be large in numbers. The Gun Lobby is not that large, but it has deep pockets. The money confers power. The rallying cry is The Second Amendment (current interpretation of bearing arms). Politicians would be falling all over themselves championing illegal immigrant desired issues if they had deep pockets.
What is interesting to note is that the rallying cry of one time may be the opposite the next. Such as Patriotism and now libertarianism (current interpretation you owe nothing to government).
Suppose green marbles were a strong constituency that wanted blue marbles restricted. You can bet politicians will be championing a rallying cry, “Green First!”.
