The election of President Obama in 2008 was a fluke. The rich and powerful were seeing their wealth evaporate with the financial crisis. The Republicans, in an ideological haze, indicated they were not going to bail them out. The rich and powerful did the unthinkable and pulled the rug out from under the Republicans. The rich and powerful cast their lot with the Democrats.

A powerful enough coalition of the rich and powerful in 2012 decided to continue to cast their welfare with the Democrats. Their wealth had not only returned but greatly grew. They again pulled the rug out from under the Republicans.

The government shut downs, the debt ceiling and the credit rating all point to Republicans forgetting who controls the nation. I think the rich and powerful are going to send an unequivocal message. They are going to the politician bazaar and shop for politicians that will be locked in to do their bidding. Shopping could not be better. It is a buyer’s market with incumbents facing insurgent challenges at home and insurgents needing strong financial backing to unseat incumbents.
