Cartoon 888: Glib remark

A glib remark is that all Black women need to do is just get married to rise out of poverty. They go on to state statistics support this. What is missing is that the marriage statistics they reference are the success stories. Marriage improves things the higher up the income latter you start. Black women at the bottom have much less success.

The goal of the suggested marriage option is to increase the finances. Black males in this environment have often been incarcerated and have marginal employment. Black women typically have two or more children at this stage. Financial gained is questionable. Both would be taking on additional debt. Both are likely to be stressed and have emotional problems.

One correspondent in a prominent newspaper recognized the constraints and suggested Black women try to marry White men. Great in theory. But the ones at the bottom have little to entice.

The answer is provide social services such as early childhood education and affordable day and after school care. Children raised in a better environment fare better. Second, allow felons to vote and have a more equable justice system in America. The less these males are convicted and incarcerated, the better their employment opportunities.

Today minorities make up 60% of the incarcerated while only 33% of the population. Are they really that much worst or is something else at play?
