Cartoon 722: Laws

Laws are most easily enforced when they represent a consensus of society. In fact most enforcement is peer pressure based on traditional ways of action. Seldom is there the need for force through police. But on those occasions where it is required, it is the unequivocal will of the people. Often the police are the moderating force.

Around the world we witness laws enacted that are heralded as great and wonderful by the indigenous or majority population and are venomous to the immigrants, minorities or other identifiable subset. This is not a new phenomenon. It seems to be more prevalent during times of strife when adversity has set in or change is occurring.

The incumbents often label their actions “conservatism” or a return to the social condition when their dominance was less assailable.  Their goal is to reorder society according to this vision. However, the conditions that gave rise to that society have been significantly altered. A return becomes merely a “Quixote” endeavor of tilting windmills.

A socially adversarial initiative requires control of the judiciary.
